The Future

What was the past like?
Was it crippling, racist drudgery
as taught by our elites?
Was it ignorant, gloomy night
unbroken by relief?
There is a darkness in the present;
and if it was there in the past
there is no hope for us.
What were humans like before,
their brains bent by TV,
they smiled down the camera
with made-up faces?
What were people like
before they'd seen every atrocity
committed in every possible way
before they left childhood?
What was the world like
before humans learnt to deceive themselves
and harden their hearts
against another's pain?
Who is there to save us?
What is there out there
to save us from the past
and save us for the future?
